Where Are They Now?
The Story
The story of the Saints Showband actually starts in 1920 when Syd
Shine was born in Athlone. Syd's father, Martin, would build a house
and shop on land formerly owned by by the Shell Oil Company and
would soon be convinced by Syd's eldest brother Frank, to build a
ballroom on the top floor in the mid 1930's. The ballroom
immediately became the centre of social life in Athlone

The first mention we could find of Syd Shine's Saints Showband was
in May, 1964 when the band was advertised as the Crescent Ballroom's
"New Resident Beat Group." The band was managed by Pat Noone of
Claremorris and started life as a five piece
On January 1st, 1966the bad was
featureed on TE's Showband Show.
