Castlebar showband to re-form for special show

Wednesday March 9, 2005

In the glory days of the showband era during the sixties and seventies, there were close to six hundred showbands on the road in Ireland, most playing five and six nights a week in dance halls up and down the country. The youngest band during the showband boom was a band from Castlebar called ‘The Leaders’ Showband, which is now planning a reunion.

The five members of the band were: Jimmy Deacy on Drums, who now plays with the Brose Walsh Band, Bob Madden, lead guitar, who now has his own band in Ballina, Joe Berney plays with the big bands in Galway and is very much looking forward to the re-union, Paddy Jordon, who is still very involved with the music scene in America, is flying home for the gig, as is Stephen, his brother, who is in the music business in England. The band were managed by the late PJ Hennelly, who was a legend in the business, a great PR Man, who managed to get the band into all the top dance halls of the day, and for many years were a much sought after band. As time went by, like so many other great bands of that era, they called it a day.

Now, more than thirty years later, The Leaders are to re-form for one night only in August, as part of the McHale Road 70th Birthday celebrations in Castlebar. There will be a buffet in the TF Hotel on Saturday, 6 August, and a big street party with live music and lots more on Sunday, August 7.

The committee, under the chairmanship of Bridie O’Connor, Johnny Mee, the Press Officer, and the hard-working committee members, Marie Brinklow, Kevin Guthrie, Margaret Deacy and Chris Kilcourse, is working very hard to ensure that the forthcoming celebrations will be a weekend to remember.
