Showband Era Advertising
One thing the showbands
did was pump money into promotions, fueling an entire sector of Ireland's
depressed economy. They made records, ran ads, took photos, printed posters,
created giveaways...there seemed to be no end to their promotional creativity.
In addition to the bands themselves, promoters ran ads for dances on a regular
basis, providing most local papers with a wealth of income for their
entertainment section. Finally, the era also created opportunities for vendors
of equipments, lighting, and other products. Here is a small sampling of ads
from the 60's, 70's and 80's.
