Greetings all. I joined this site on Oct 5 2011. The artist I checked out was Dermot O'brien, and I noticed some inaccuracies in his biography but was delighted to find out new information concerning Dermot. This morning when I logged on the site wouldn't send me to Dermot's profile, so that I could refer to it when making suggestions. I was privileged to be on Dermot's final tours of Ireland in 2002 and 2003. My family emigrated from Ireland to Canada in the late 1960's, so over the years, it was difficult to piece together Dermot's discography. One album I noticed missing from the forum was his 1969/1970 country album "Listen, They're playing my song," on the Envoy record label. Another album missing ( probably his first) was "Music of Ireland-Dermot O'brien and his quartet play ceili music. This was recorded in the U.S. in 1962 on the Spoken Arts label. I don't think "Dermot O'brien" BRL 4103 was listed either. When I had the chance to query Dermot on his discography, his memory didn't serve him well. I don't recall his last great album recorded in Ireland in 1983, Girl from Clare. I had heard he recorded a single, "County Louth". I have never heard it. Does anyone know if he wrote and recorded "The Blue Hills of Breffni" I"m running out of time this morning, so one last correction. He captained Louth for the All Ireland GAA in 1957. As I am a serious fan of Dermot's music, I would appreciate information about recordings I have missed, like the ones I have mentioned. I would really appreciate a copy. I am willing to share some of the live recordings I made in 2002-2003 as a token of gratitude(or any of the others I mentioned). His level of musical mastery in these recordings is breathtaking especially at the age he was at the time(71-72) I can be reached at tommyg109@gmail.com. Hope to get some feedback. Saol se go hiontach............ tommy...

Spiros, great to hear from you. As I said loved the string machine and eventually bought one but it was hearing you and the wonderful, very full analogue sound that made me do it. I eventually changed it for a DX7 which I still have after about 24 years but it could never live up to the old analogue sound of the string machine.

I always went to Seapoint whenever ye were there and always felt that your contribution to the band made the sound they had. I also felt that Ronan Collins was the best drummer that was in that band. I think the other drummer that was there was PJ Coyne but not sure. I think I read somewhere that Bobby Murphy that played Sax in your time there has passed away.

Anyway ........ great to hear from you and hope life is treating you well.

Keep in touch,

Gerry

looking to reach Pat Chesters, my parents were big fans of the Royal Showband/Big 8 from back in the 70's when they played in Vegas. My dad had played the sax in a small band and was a fan of Pat's. My father passed away years ago but my mother still talks about how much she and dad enjoyed their time at the Stardust listening to the band. If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated. Thanks

GEAR - Marmac and Binson Amps

Hi, I'm looking for information about Marmac amps, built in Sligo during the seventies. I've seen several Binson amps that appear to be Marmac amps with Binson badges. What's the Marmac/Binson connection? Also I noticed that Marmac amp head cabinets seem to be nearly identical to Matamp cabinetry. Was Marmac connected with Matamp? Finally, I noticed someone is selling a new knockoff of a tweed era Princeton amp on fleaBay that has a Marmac badge. Does anyone know about this "new" Marmac venture? Cheers!

I remeber the Dermot Hurley Crazy Boxes, as to how they got their name......? I do know they were filled with 8 or 9 10" speakers and ran on 100v line so as to avoid a lot of impedance matching. The other thing is he used to hire them out c/w a philips amp ( vertical faders on the front) , a binson ehorec and a couple of Shure 'Skull' mikes. I am not sure but I think it may have been Dickie Roc who bought one of the original set-ups and helped to popularise them.
Other notable suppliers at that time, or soon thereafter, in Dublin, were Pat Dolan (near the airport) and also the Band Centre (Harcourt Road). In later years another site was near the Olympia Theatre and they specialised in Bose PA and Yamaha mixers. A very robust amp speaker setup common in those days was HiWatt, a very well built amp and took the rigours of the road extremely well. A late comer to the market was HH from Cambridge in England who made exceptionally good transistorised amps, gained from their experience in the broadcast industry (TV & Radio). Alas they got in to all kinds of adventurous stuff and ran into problems and eventually went belly up. Hope this helps you.

Hi Marie, you will probably know by now that the Miami are back on the road, unfortunatley the Galway show has been cancelled, but the lads are in Clifden on 18th Dec. The band include, Des Lee, Ray Miller, Steven Travers, Gerry Brown, Johnny Fean and Barry Woods, I have travelled all over the place to see them and they are fantastic, anyone that remembers the lads should make a point of getting to at least one of their shows, they have a back drop with photo's of the Miami through the years and special footage of the late GREAT FRAN O'TOOLE. They are also in the DO YOU COME HERE OFTEN line up this year, and as well as Belfast, Dublin and Derry they have added Killarney and Mullingar to the tour dates. Killarney is the INEC Friday 2nd Jan09, and Mullingar is the Mullingar Park Hotel Sat 3rd Jan09.
THE LINE UP FOR THE SHOW INCLUDES, Brendan Bowyer, The Miami, D. J. Curtin, Eileen Reid, Declan Ryan, Hugo Duncan, Dominic Kirwan and Mary Duff. I am really looking forward to the shows.
Lynne
ps, if anyone would like the dates of the Miami I can let you have them.
