Title: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/08/06 at 19:24:11
Yeh i am back roasted and toasted and amazed that no one not even Liamo or Trisha or Dee or anyone for that matter could come up with the answer. Here it is again what Irish Eurovision artist replaced their Eurovision entry in the Irish charts with another Eurovision song from the same contest. When you think that quiet a lot of our entries had just the odd hit ok the big ones like Dickie etc has lots but some never had a follow up never mind a hit again but this one had a few hits.Must go now as i want to play that all important record. :o :o :o

Oh! So you're back then TP!...That question has to be one of the most irritating of them all >:(.
I'm going to have another go at it & suggest Tina Reynolds in '74.... |

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/08/06 at 21:11:27
That Dutch song - which by the way, came 4th, was in 1972 & Sandie Jones was the Irish entry that year...Luxembourg won it ( Vicky Leandros)...
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/08/06 at 22:16:12
Well about time too yes Sandie Jones was our entry in 72 with Ceol An Ghra which went on to top the Irish charts and no doubt while at the Eurovision someone liked the Dutch entry and when Sandra and Andres recorded an English version Sandie along with Joe and The Dixes covered it and it too also topped the Irish charts under the English title What Do I Do.Both on the Play label Play 20 and Play 21.Naturally i could not say they both topped the charts or that it was a female but we got a good bit of milage out of it and giving the Dutch title i knew the end was near and so i faced my final curtain.Regrets i,ve had a few and i am going now to get ready and have a few more. Holidays nearly over.;D ;D ;D

Another Eurovision Quickie and no hints.Back in 57 the UK entered the Eurovision for the first time with a song called
ALL and sung by Patricia Bredin what was so unique about this song and artist which never happened again. :-X :-X :-X |
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by liamo on 09/08/06 at 22:43:48
The song was never recorded 8)
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/08/06 at 23:05:07
Yeh your back on song BUT while it was never recorded by Miss Bredin ( i got her version last week on cd probably from the radio but a good quality recording nevertheless ) it was recorded by two artists one the only known vocal version only released on a 78 and the other was an orchestral version released on a 45 both highly desired by Euro Heads of which i am not one but i do have a soft spot for it. The Allisons Are You Sure for the UK back in 61 is my all time favourite a kinda UK Everly Brothers but a great song.Look at some of the songs that never won yet went on to become more well known than the winners Volare / Love Is Blue / Congratulations / Walk Away ;) ;) ;)

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by liamo on 09/08/06 at 23:10:16
That's true TP. Where would you beat Volare and The Allisons is one of my favourites as well :)

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/10/06 at 02:42:11
I'd like to go back to TP's original question...He's right about the two songs but can someone answer me this.....The Netherlands entry, when translated into English, is 'When it's all about love' or 'If it concerns love'. Sandie Jones' song title is 'What do I do'. I found the song on 'Limewire' & got the lyrics translated & they're nothing like Sandie's version.....I remember the words to that one, but when I saw the lyrics to the Dutch one, I was totally confused....yet the tune, of course, is the same... ???
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/10/06 at 11:40:32
The duo who did the original also recorded it as What Do I Do on Philips 6012 208 back in 72 so they did the translation themselves. To add fuel to the fire the Dutch translation is " Ifs Its About Love ".
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/10/06 at 13:44:08
Hi TP...I have visited many web-sites in search of this song, from the UK & the Netherlands. I have found three titles for it (so far), when translated into English: 'When it's all about love', 'If it concerns love' & 'If it's about love'. I think we can safely say the it's a 'Love'-ly song! ;D
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by liamo on 09/10/06 at 13:46:38
Here's another shovel of coal for the fire ;D I've just arrived back from a Eurovision site and I get TWO English titles for the Dutch song.;;;;;;;;
1 Where Love Is Concerned. 2. When It's All About Love. ??? :-[ ??? :P 8) :P >:( ??? :( :-[ :-X |
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/10/06 at 14:48:24
It would have been ok if they just used the opening line Na Na Na Nana as it translates the same in any language. ;) ;) ;)
Now another Eurovision question which i came across only recently Sir Cliff Richard finished 2nd in 68 with Congratulations and finished 3rd in 73 with Power To All Our Friends but i have since discovered he had a hit with another Eurovision song which surprised me as i never knew the song originated in the Eurovision.Thats the good thing about this record / business you can learn something new every day. :o :o :o |
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/10/06 at 22:05:08
Ok TP....After some very careful research, I discovered that: In 1973 - Cliff sang in 'A song for Europe' (that is Britain's Euro song selection). He sang all the songs that night & 'Power to all our Friends' won. But he also released another song from that selection, which was 'Ashes to Ashes' - not to be confused with David Bowie's song. Is that the answer you're looking for? If not, well it's some more info for ya! :P
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/10/06 at 22:14:58
Nice try Trisha but alas not the answer i am looking for .This song was in the Eurovision Song Contest. ::) ::) ::)
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/10/06 at 23:16:18
Hey TP!....Have you got a European language translator handy? Nearly all the Euro songs I found were in a foreign language! I'm not that clever y'know!.... ???
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/10/06 at 23:18:30
You do not need one for this answer. ;D ;D ;D
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/10/06 at 23:51:33
Ok TP....What about this one?:1968, Italian Euro entry - 'Marianne'. He also recorded it in German... that same year.... ;)

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by celebrity on 09/11/06 at 00:10:08
Irene Mccoubrie born in 1950,represented Ireland twice in the Eurovision, once in a solo capacity and once as part of a group but who is she,and what links her with Adele King and Barbara Dickson( the irish one,not the scottish one)?

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/11/06 at 00:15:11

|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/11/06 at 20:46:31
Well Trisha you never fail to amaze me how do you know about all these sites.I only know of one Eurovision site. What i will have to do is come up with a question that you cannot find the answer on the net and the fact that you are talking about Maxi Dick & Twink i think i have one for later tonight. The first voice i hear in the morning at 5.30 am is Maxi and i like her early morning music. ;) ;) ;)
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/11/06 at 21:21:54
Here we go its a well known fact that Maxi Dick & Twink finished second in our Song For Europe back in 1970 with a song called Things You Hear About Me and had a top 20 hit with it.The song was written by two of our famous troupadors at that time and both i do believe are still with us and still performing. They were both regulars back in the 60s / 70s on RTE so who were they.I expect a bit of milage out of this one. :P :P :P

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/12/06 at 20:52:05
Hi TP..Have you got that record? Reason I ask, is because I've found it for sale on a web-site & you'd never believe how much it's selling for..... ;)

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/12/06 at 21:58:09
I have it on an album but suprise me with the price.I do have the follow up but that will be the next question :'( :'( :'(
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 09/12/06 at 23:06:47
The going price at the moment is £44. That probably sounds reasonable to you..but it didn't even win the Nationals...let alone the Eurovision & it's highest place in the charts was at 17.... ???
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/12/06 at 23:09:39
Trisha i guessed it was on Gemm but believe me Vinyltap who are a major dealer in the UK probably have their own website.Yes even the so called experts can get it all wrong. He is selling that or trying to sell it in the belief that it includes Twink of the Pink Fairies who are very collectable. They were out back then in 1970.To put things into context a copy was on ebay recently for £1.99 and did not sell.Vinyltap are probably one of the dearest sellers on this earth everything is vastly overpriced and Gemm is also a very dear place to buy stuff compared to ebay. :o :o :o
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/12/06 at 23:18:01
Looks like we both replied at the same time. While Eurovision stuff by that i mean the obscure singles are collectable only a few Euroheads collect songs from the National Song Contest and i researched our own sometime back and you would be surprised how many were actually released on 45.Most collectors do not know what was issued. While very few of the UK Song For Europe hopefuls were ever released there have been quiet a few from our own National Song Contest especially in the late 60s and 70s.I am sure i will find a question or two there for our next outing. :D :D :D

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by liamo on 09/15/06 at 18:57:24
Back to TPs question about the Maxi Dick and Twink song. I'd say it was written by Jim Doherty and Les Smith 8)
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 09/15/06 at 19:39:59
Thank God you are back Liamo we will forgive the typo error it was indeed Jim Doherty and Des Smyth. Now just to wrap up this MD&T what was their follow up called a little hint it was written by Kenny Young.A nice bouncy number. ::) ::) ::)
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Munster4ever on 11/18/06 at 11:42:31
I've seen MD&T's "Things You Hear About Me" going for £80! Their follow up was "Tangerines Tangerines". (Sorry to spoil you next question , alpineseven.) But I cannot find that anywhere.
The problem I have is that even if I could get my hands on their reocrds, they are on vinyl and that means finding equipment on which to play it and eventually transfer to CD. |
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by alpineseven on 11/18/06 at 15:02:10
Alas before you go out and buy any Maxi Dick & Twink 45s i would like to set the record ( if you pardon the pun ) straight. That record that major UK dealer is selling is a con job as he is selling it on the pretence that the Twink is the GUY who sang with the highly collectable group Pink Fairies so forget about it as a copy of Things You Hear About Me has been up on ebay twice in the last few months and it did not sell and the asking price was £2.99 yes 1P short of £3. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by liamo on 11/18/06 at 17:03:18
Hello Munster4ever. Don't worry, if you get those records you can send them to me. I have a turntable ;D ;D
|
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 11/18/06 at 20:10:05
Hi Munster4ever, I was going to ask if anybody still has the old turntables anymore. I have & enjoy playing my old vinyls on it. It sometimes pays not to throw these things out - don't ya think? Don't worry about sending me those records though...it'd cost you more on the postage than what they're probably worth... :)

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Trisha on 11/18/06 at 22:42:25
Hi TP. Thanks for that....As some of the 'regulars' know, I've been ill for just over a month. Not back to full speed yet but I'm slowly getting there. So thanks to everyone for their kind messages & e-mails. It's great to see that we have such a caring forum here. Also, TP...less of the 'old' friends please!! ;)

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Munster4ever on 11/20/06 at 02:33:24
Thanks for the offers of turntables, guys. I may yet take you up on it. I have to get the records first. I see mention in an earlier posting of Maxi, Danny Doyle and Music Box. Did they make any records?
And did any of the three girls make any other records. I'd like to know about them? And is there anywhere on the web I can read morer about them and see some pix? Thanks to all. |
Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by liamo on 11/20/06 at 03:01:46
Twink made some recordings when she was with the Big 8 Showband. Some are on the LP, Brendan Bowyer, Tom Dunphy and The Big 8. Biding My Time and Mr. Monday.

Title: Re: Irish Eurovision Question Again From TP Post by Munster4ever on 11/20/06 at 03:44:00
Thanks Ilamo. I also heard that the three girls worked with a band called the Bylaws and when the two groups joined together they called themslelves Toy box. Anyone know about that?
