Hi does anyone remember the Flamingo Ballroom in Ballymena ?. Dances there were run by the late Sammy Barr.

I remember the Flamingo and played there many times as a young Musician. We had a band called Frankie and the Echoes and we did support for many International acts and Irish Showbands in the late 60's. We were most gratefull to Sammy Barr for all the advise  and opportunities he gave us

I was in the flamingo a month ago to research a programme idea on dancehalls in the north. I spoke to Sammy Barr's grand daughter who now runs part of the hall as a dance studio. The wooden floor is still the same and the glitterball is still there.  A wall divides the dancehall in two and the other side is used as a youth club by a local church. The Flamingo sign is still outside and a potted history of the dancehall is on a board in the hallway with a few photographs.  Apparently a week doesn't go by without people dropping in to have a look at the place where they or their parents or grandparents met.

hilton showband, it was probably one of the best gigs in the north
and we were always treated ist. class
