Title: Tales From The Road
Post by Admin on 05/19/04 at 02:56:25
I'm sure every musician who ever played in a bonafide Irish ballroom has a million stories from the road. Most of them funny, but some that are thoughtful or downright sad. What are your stories? What was the worst thing that ever happened? The best thing? The strangest thing? This is the place to share those experiences and ensure the legacy lives on!

Tut Tut Gerry! The Newmens' "Holiday Girl" has to rate as one of the top showband singles EVER!

P.S: I could tell you where to find a photo of them, but.... ;)

Hi Francis,

You forget that I didn't come "on the scene" until the 70's by which time the Newman had split up. Since that post of June, 2004, I have come to know so much about so many of the bands that were around before my time...thanks to visitors to the website...  ;D

While in the 'Blue Aces' I  played in most all Irish Ballrooms and Clubs in England back in the Sixties. One of my fondest memories was playing the more remote Country Venues. When we finished the Gig there was always some sandwiches and a crate of drink to 'see us Home'. Those acts of kindness just about sumed up the kind of People we Entertained back then.

just stole this from another thread....

"They say that Naas is a terrible place,
And Kilmuckeridge is just as bad,
But of all the places I've ever been,
Well, f**k me, Kinnegad..."

ain't that just right!

I never experienced one, but I heard about ambushes involving various  ford transits or bedfords or whatever passed for a bandwagon in them days.  One particular band (led on by its prankster leader) seemed to engage in this activity quite a bit...anyone remember this?

Hey! Whistle, Have you ever visited, lived or just driven through any of those towns mentioned in that little verse? I'm sure they're no different to hundreds of little towns or villages in Ireland y'know. (Apologies to anyone living in or from Naas, I'm sure you're a much bigger town than Kinnegad & I don't know anything about Kilmuckeridge)  :)

Hello Trisha, I've been in everyone of them, and more besides!  It's just a harmless ditty really, its not meant to offend - as you I think alluded to earlier, anywhere that rhymes with "bad" is a target!
