He was in the same small ward with me in St. Vincent's hospital last September when he had a kidney removed (an inherited family trait). A really nice guy who impressed everyone when he woke up in the ward after his operation and immediately started to do a crossword puzzle. He did have a lot of pain during his recovery afterwards, however. I remember one night, as Johnny was bravely struggling to cope with his pain, seeing a really compassionate African night-nurse give him a kiss as she went about her rounds late at night. She didn't realise that I saw her, and it was a very touching scene. It's interesting how people can affect us even though we may know them for only a short time.
