Title: Shannonside Northern Sound Radi
Post by lulu on 06/19/08 at 13:27:52
I would like to share a letter I read on another showband site.
This is from a  Brendon Sweeney.
There was a great showband show on Shannonside radio which
ran for many years. Eddie Murphy was the presenter, this
programme was one of the most popular for older music lovers.
Then Radio Kerry bought Shannonside radio and axed the show,
without a care about all the people who listened to it.
I would ask all the lovers of showbands, to e mail the managing
director of radio kerry and shannonside northern sound, asking
that they give us back our 1 hour a week of the music that means
so much to us. It is our local station, so please ask them to consider
our likes in music, email Paul Byrne. at           info@radiokerry.ie
and email E Kelly at     info@shannonside.ie

Fair play to you Brendon,   why do radio stations try to tell us
what we like listening to. I will certainly email the two stations.

The showband era will always hold a very special place in all our hearts and it's sad that neither local or national radio care enough to offer showband fans a dedicated weekly programme of showband music.  Apart from the odd showband recording on the Ronan Collins Show on Radio 1, RTE don't give a hoot about us. On the local radio front it's even worse with no local station hosting a dedicated showband programme. Local radio has all but abandoned the criteria by which it obtained a licence in the first place. Big business has taken over the majority of local radio stations and its all about profit. The idea seems to be, get some kid in who doesn't know a thing about music but wants to be on radio and he or she is so chuffed at being on the radio that they are prepared to work for small wages and less than perfect conditions of employment.. And at the top level the people who run the stations seem to have more respect for the  advertisers than the loyal listeners who put the radio stations where they are.  The feedback I'm getting is , don't hold your breath for a showband programme on any local radio station.

Tiptop, although I dont think it will be heeded, Brendon is
quite right to suggest that we should email shannonside and radio kerry, even to make them aware that showband music has a
special place in our hearts, and for what reason would they
have taken off the Showband Show with Eddie Murphy.
Who along with Larry Gogan and Brendon Mulvey always promoted irish bands.
       regards.

Sorry Guys but there is a weekly programme dedicated to Showband music.  Clanrye FM braodcast on www.clanrye.org and Jim Winterman presents an hour (at least) of showband music every Friday morning during his show from 9 to 12.  The rest of the station is about 80% country and 20% everything else.

There is also a lot of showband music played on Dickie Rays show and Philip Hughes show.
