Would the connection be Derk Taylor, press agent for the Beatles? He started a PR company in the mid 60s that handled PR for the Byrds and others.

that's one answer, Liam.  The 4 connections are as follows:

the "misspelling" of "Byrds" was supposedly done as homage to the "misspelling" of "Beatles";
McGuinn was inspired to play the Rickenbacker by George Harrison;
the publicist for the Byrds (Derek Taylor) did publicity for the Beatles and he introduced the two bands, who subsequently spent time together;
and the Beatles were quoted as saying the Byrds were their favourite band.
And a possible 5th connection:
alleged, but not referenced anywhere: David Crosby introduced the Beatles to sitar music.
