Comments: Hi Does anyone remember the Tara Showband? played regularly at the Maple Leaf Ballroom in Toronto Canada. My mother remmbers them well and would love to know what happened to some of the members - she remembers Norman Payne who was from Galway particularly. My father Jimmy Kerrigan even has a trial for the band back in 1966/67. My mothers name is Vicky and she and my father had emigrated to Canada in the 1960's. I know my mother would love to hear from anyone who can remember. Thanks  Lea

Comments: Hello, It was great to find this site, I'm really pleased somebody did it and it's a great resource, well done to all concerned. We are constantly looking for recordings of Jonathan Ledingham/Jonathan Kelly and if anybody reading this knows of any live audio recordings, (especially of Jonathan Ledingham) or any video or movie footage that has survived then I would be very grateful if they could let me know. Although Jonathan made many TV appearences, no footage is known to have survived which is a great tradgedy. All the best, Gerald Sables

Just a couple of minor tweaks for you, The People were a Belfast group, not Portadown, and  Light were also Belfast not Dublin. Keep up the good work.

Comments: In the sixties in Thurles my best friend was Ger Cornally who at that time played drums for the Jack Hanley Showband and I used to travel with them to gigs and because I was with them I used to have a great time. I left Thurles in 1968 and shortly after came to England to train to be a nurse where I still am. Its great to browse your site and it brings back great memories of the Showband era. Ger went on to play for the Skyrockets and as with a lot of things we lost touch. If anyone is ever in contact with him please give him my best regards and remind him of the day we rode miles on our bikes to see a girl he used to like who worked in one of the hotels. Thank you for bringing back great memories. Best Wishes, Garry Fogarty

Editor: We think Ger is still living in Thurles and playing with Tony Stevens and the Rusty Roosters.

Comments: In the 60's, when midium wave still had strong stations, I was a regular listener to the Irish top 10 on monday evening. that's how I learnt to know and appreciate Irish show bands. Some information on this page brings back sentimental memories to me, as irish music was hardly known in my country (Netherlands) at that time. But that is also why a lot of information on your page is completely new to me (and most interesting of course). I wish you a lot of success in maintaining this page.

Comments: I saw Sandy Kelly in Concert in 1993, when she toured with Slim Whitman and George Hamilton iv. I enjoyed her very much and I'm disappointed no mention has been made on this site of her touring with  Slim Whitman, who is afterall, a Great Country Legend and very popular in Britain and the U.k. having toured about 15 times between 1956 and Oct 2002 (13 tours between 1970 and 2002) and whose career lasted more than 55 years. How about telling us more about Sandy? When was she born and how she was partly brought up in Wales at Port Talbot, as I seemed to remember her telling us?

Comments:  Hi! The Jim Cantwell Big Band was from Kilkenny and was made up of members of The Nomads and The Black Aces. Paddy Day who joined them for a short while in 1970 is from Tralee and is a first cousin of D.J. Curtin. He had a mini hit with The Prisoner which was later recorded by Dermot Hegarty as 21 Years. Paddy Day also sang with The Wandering Stars, some of whom joined The Royal when the Big8 were formed.
Best Wishes, Padraig Long.

Comments: Hi! Just to let you know that The Jimmy Rohan Ochestra was from Tralee. Regarding the Airchords, there were major changes in the band in 1971 however the band reformed with the majority of the Regal Showband joining Pat Lynch and having two big hits - When We Were Young and Three Good Reasons. They later changed their name to the Tree Tops and Derek Davis joined the band for a short while - known as Pat Lynch, Mean Tom and The Tree Tops, - Derek Davis being Mean Tom ! Pat Lynch and The Tree Tops (without D D ) had a hit in 1972 with a song called Darling. A few more bands for your list - The Skylons, The Merriemen, the Telstars, Bunny Dalton Showband, The Country Hillsiders. Killarney Swinging Jarveys, The Kerry Cowboys, The Spring Beats and The Troubadours. The Abeline which you include in your list, became The Tom Kelly Sound before they became The Fairways. Regarding The Kerry Blues they had eight members for a while as one of the photos shows - the member not listed being organist Oliver McCague who hailed from N. Ireland if my memory serves me right. D.J. left to join The Big 8 in 1977 and was replaced by Shiela Turner. Best Wishes for now, Padraig Long.

Comments: I would love to hear from Bob Ormsby and any exmembers of the Bob Ormsby All Stars. We are all knocking on a bit now and probably still performing. Strange how we could be happy with a 30 watt amp. Now we won't settle for anything less than a 1k sound system with all the trimmings. And thats just for a solo artist. Maybe a section on equipment then and now would create further interest in this already mind jogging and thought prevoking site. Keep up the good work, All the best Tony

Comments: Hi - just wanted to say that the site is great for those who remember the glory of the Irish show band days and also for the children of those great musicians and singers. My father Gerry McCrudden passed away suddenly in Feb 06 and we will never forget him. He was a legend and was still entertaining the masses in Belfast playing (keyboards) and singing up until a few days before he died (aged 70)- his last gig was on valentines day for the swinging lovers! Tonight, 19th June 08, the Grenadiers and their wives are getting together for a meal and to catch up with each other... sadly without Gerry and Bo but Pauline and Lilah are there to represent them and honour their memories. It just goes to show how true friendships were formed and have lasted through the show bands. Something that makes me feel  very proud. Nicola McCrudden

Comments: I have several Celtic cd´s. On one of them sing Ian Corrigan "Irish Eyes". Every day I listen to that number. It touch a place in my soul. It drives me crazy, that I can`t find the lyric to the song: Every time I seek, it pop up with the number "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling", and it`s not that, it IS "Irish Eyes". I can hear every single word in the song, but as english is not my first language, it`s sometime hard for me to do spelling right. I live in Denmark.

Comments: Cead Mile Failte! I heard of this great band back in the mid- to late-80's, perhaps 1985 or 1986,  while I was a DJ at a place called The Irish Center in Leeds, N.Y. I came upon an old, beat up cassette copy of one of their albums which contained their version of "Clare to Here."  I have this by several other artists, but theirs was by far the best I have heard.  This cassette, which has long since been destroyed, also included a song called "The Sunday Papers." Would love to obtain this song/album  in any format, including .mp3, so I can once again enjoy it.
Thanks for any help someone might be able to provide me!

Comments: Hi, Do any ex showband members remember the Star ballroom in Cappamore Co.Limerick owned and run by Pat Mc Carthy who is in his 80s and still going strong, and misses those great dance hall years. The Star still stands but unfortunately no longer as a dance hall, it closed its doors to the dance world in 1976.
This is a great site to revisit those great years , different times from today, but very exciting for everyone in the business and especially the patrons who flocked to the dance halls to see and enjoy their favourite bands week on week Thanks for the great site and keep up the good work. Brendan Mc Carthy Limerick

Comments: Sorry to hear of death of Barry Scully. My sister Marie was a friend of his from the Donaghmeade days she was the female singer with the band there in late 70s. She continued to use her stage name of Donna for years while singing in cabarate in the 80s.  Marie then formed a group with myself and her brother called Donna and the sensations which Barry wrote the dots for all our songs. I have clear memories of meeting Barry in canteen in C. I .E . at the back of clearys. It was there he gave us the dots to our songs I still have them today signed by Barry himself. Sadly Marie passed away on nov 13 2007 aged 47 strange as it seems she died the same way as Barry did . It was trying to locate Barry to tell him of Maries death ,I   found out about Barrys passing. I have great memories of my sister Marie , one of the best was singing Argentina    with Barry and the lads of ORANGE the resident band  in Donaghmeade inn ,she was just a small young girl with a huge voice. I miss her voice.  A sad sister, Bridget

Comments: Joe Dolan was one of my favourite singers/entainers. I did meet him onetime in the MOGUL resteraunt in All Saints in Manchester, that was in the early 70s. I still remember it well,we were sat with Matt Monro 9another great artieste)and Chic Taylor who owned the Bossanova night club in Manchester. I did not believe my eyes when Joe Dolan walked in but i cant rember who was with him, what a great night/morning we had drinking champagne & brandy. The memory lives on of those great years when i saw Joe first at a Carnival in Mountbellew, his singing, the songs & the Drifters.I sure he is in Gods group of singing angles.Long may his memories live with those who rember Joe & The Drifters.God rest you in peace... Comments: Your column on Showbands revived so many memories of my childhood in Nenagh. Like most of my friends of that time , we were in our early teens, thus unable to gain admission to the various dance venues. However we would stand outside to watch the band members arrive and be awestruck by the attire, musical instruments, equipment and personality of all the ' Celebrities ' On numerous occasions we would sit on the flat  roof by the side of the scouts hall, Now the Nenagh post office and watch the bands and dancing. I still remember listening to Billy O Brien play, Jack White singing etc. Strange how you have revived all those beautiful childhood memories. I left Nenagh with the rest of my family to live in England, in 1963. Looking back to those happy times, it's sad to day that we have lost that beautiful innocence of the showband era

Comments: Still can't understand why the showbands never made it big in the uk, as they were just as good as some of the british uk bands. Would still love to hear from John Mcmanus, Irelands greatest ever drummer with New Blues and The Cotton Mill Boys, he was a good pal and introduced me to Guinness too, would love to hear from anyone who remembers me from the showband days, or from the North Star where I stayed in Dublin from 1975 to 1984.Keep up the good work Gerry.Best Wishes, Pete.

Comments: A tremendous journey down memory lane which brought me back to the 50s & 60s, and a renewed appreciation of the times we were gifted to experience  I am looking forward to introducing the site to my children ,who by their furtive grins at each other when I reminisce of these times  obviously think  that I have lost the plot and gone Ga Ga .. Know all little git's ! this will show them , they like most of this generation tend to know the price of everything , and the value of nothing. My congratulations to all concerned for what  for me has been  an instant trip back to my youth , and in many ways happier times than than the ones we now live in .Many thanks . Brian.

Comments: Thank you, thank you, thank you for this wonderful nostalgic trip. I was an inveterate jiver between 1960 and 1963, with a special interest in Dave Glover, ranging from The Astor and The Technical College in Belfast, to the Portrush ballroom and Caproni's in Bangor, where I also saw a wide range of other bands. To see Jim "Kit" Carson and Dave Martin again gave me a lot of pleasure A big moment in my life was seeing the Royal Showband in Drogheda circa 1961, while I was the Rock and Roll Redcoat at Butlin's Mosney. I now live in Paris where I'm glad to say jiving is still alive and kicking! Congatulations on a brilliant site! Don Hanna
