Great pictures of the freshmen as they were one of my favourite bands. probably due to my uncle Raymond Donnan being the youngest member (furthest to the right here) http://www.irish-showbands.com/images/pop/freshmen2x.htm overall a great site and it shows what a great music heritage Ireland has. Also one of the group is called Billy Brown --Ryan--

Answer: Thanks Ryan, for your message and the info about your uncle, Ray Donnan. We have corrected the photo to include his name (he was already a part of our musician's directory). By the way, although Billy Brown was one of the original members of the Freshmen, he was not a member when that photo was taken, he left the band for a time to form his own band in the early 70's. Thanks for the info, if Ray has an email address, please ask him to contact us!

Great to see the Miami Photo Gallery on the day of the anniversary of the tragedies. Fran O'Toole was my first cousin, his dad and my dad were brothers. We were all very proud of Fran at his success in the Miami Showband and were all devastated at the news of his death and the other two members of the band on the 31st July 1975. There was a special service held yesterday 30th July at the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin at 2pm at which Dana a dear friend of Frans led the choir and there is a special memorial Miami Showband Anniversary Concert at Vicar Street Dublin on Monday 1st August organised by Dickie Rock. It will feature many of the legendary performers from the showbands. The proceeds will help build a permanent memorial of Fran, Tony and Brian.

Answer: Hi Julie, thank you for sharing your special memories of Fran and the Miami. I was on the road myself that night and we were all devastated when we heard about the tragedy. I don't think things were ever the same for the thousands of us that made a living as they did, entertaining people. Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the anniversary of their deaths...it was a very sad day that changed the Irish entertainment world forever.

Absolutely fantastic site, I was so glad to find it, Big Tom & The Mainliners have got to be the all time icon of the 60's & 70's, everybody either knows the band or has heard of them, even when Tom formed The Travellers, every dancehall was packed when they played. I am a forty something, so I inherited there music from my parents as did lots of other Irish people of my age, it's great to know that Big Tom & The Mainliers are touring again, and I for one will be first in line for my ticket when they come to my town, nostalgia you can't beat it, it's what memories are made of, and this site has resurrected many, keep up the good work, I am so glad to have found you.

Answer: Thanks Tom, Big Tom was definitely one of the entertainers that defined the era in Irish music.

Hi there, Just came on your site by accident. It brings back so many memories of the good old days .I am in the process of putting together a scrap-book of the old bands. Is it possible to buy post-card photographs of the Bands ? Please let me know. Keep up the good work.

Answer: Hi Liam, I wish there was a place to buy photos. Unfortunately, the images are are owned by the bands themselves and although we display them here as a tribute to the era, we do not have the right to sell them. Sometimes these handouts can be spotted on ebay though!

Hi, in response to who recorded Joyce's song ( We'll Sweep Out The Ashes ) if it is the same song I am thinking of, Big Tom McBride recorded it with The Travelers in the late 70's on an album entitled "Travel On" I've got to say it is an excellent album as well. I hope this helps. P.S. if you do happen to find this album, check out Patsy McDermott's excellent guitar work on the album, it's serious stuff, best wishes, T.C.

GREAT SITE AND IT BROUGHT BACK MANY MEMORIES. I WAS SO SAD TO SEE SO MANY OF THE MUSICIANS THAT I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING,PLAYING AND SHARING THE STAGE WITH . MOSTLY ON THEIR LONDON TOURS, I WAS DRUMMER/BAND LEADER OF "THE LEGIONNAIRES "AT THE INNISFAIL IRISH CLUB IN EAST LONDON,AND PRIOR TO THAT WAS RESIDENT DRUMMER AT "THE SHANDON" IN ROMFORD ESSEX,AND HAD THE PLEASURE OF PLAYING WITH THE LATE TONY"FROGGIE" WALSH OF THE BLUE ACES. LATER HAD GROUPS WHICH UNCLUDED "STRAW DOG" AND " NATIONAL EXPRESS" TO NAME BUT A FEW. I AM NOW RETIRED IN PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA. MY SON PAUL PLAYS DRUMS AROUND LONDON STILL,AND HAD A STINT WITH "PRIMAL SCREAM" THE JAZZ BUTCHER AND BLUE AEROPLANES I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYBODY THAT STILL REMEMBERS ME! HERES HOPING BEST REGARDS PAT MULREANY

Answer: Thanks Pat, there were many great bands in England during the showband era and we have been asked by other folks why we don't feature them. At this point, we only feature bands that played in Ireland, but hopefully as some point we'll be in a position to expand to include other countries like the UK, Canada, the U.S. and Australia!

Our granddaughter Gemma found The Rebel Showband by typing in her granddad's name, Paul McNab. However she came to find it, I am delighted!!! I know my darling husband Paul would love to hear from Pete Stewart or any other members of the band. You have on idea how many very happy memories this has brought back to us. Paul has always been shy and "hid his light under a bushel." I can't wait to show our grandson Tom. He is learning to play drums. I would love to hear from anybody who knew Paul, so I could surprise him.

Great site - well done all! I actually remember learning the 1972 Eurovision entry "Ceol an Ghrá" in school! Our teacher Mr. Duggan taught it to us. He was in a band called The Golden Dawn back then, and they actually entered the preliminaries in '72, but Sandie Jones went on to represent Ireland that year. And when I heard your cut from the song on your site it was amazing to hear it again after all this time!!! I remember The Golden Dawn were on tele in good oul black 'n' white, and the whole school was amazed - if anyone has this on tape of some description I'd love to see it! Oh and I'd love to talk to Mr Duggan if he's reading this! He was great! I ended up being a professional musician, and I have to say that he was a huge influence to me along with Phil Lynott! Oh and speaking of Sandies, I noticed that the entry for the '67 winner "Puppet on a String", should be by SandIE Shaw not SandY :) - I know this 'cos my wife Sandie was named after this singer in 1968 and people often spell it wrong. Hope this helps in your quest for perfection :). Good luck with it all and hi 2 everyone reading ... I'll drop back in. David

My wife and I were living in England and we timed our holidays in Ireland so that we could dance in the Embassy, Castleblayney, to either Joe Dolan (Drifters) or Larry Cunningham (Mighty Avons). We asked Larry about where we could buy his records and he took us back stage and gave us his latest LP - including the Jim Reeves number "He''ll have to go". Those were the days. The Merryland in Clones was also one of our favourites and we danced there to Pat Lynch & the Airchords. Still going strong is Ronnie Griffiths (ex keyboard - Mighty Avons) with his Band - American Pie.

Answer: Thanks Jack for stopping by the website. It's good to hear Ronnie is still on the go, he formed "Pie" in the early 70's and never looked back.

Was told about this site by a friend - I think it is great. I am a bit young to have gone to the dancehalls at the time most of the showbands were on the go, but as I am the youngest member of my family I have heard of the bands and I still love the music and I especially love Joe Dolan and Dickie Rock. I bought my friends tickets for 'Do You Come Here Often' in The Waterfornt Hall last Christmastime and it was wonderful - we are all planning on going back this year again. This music and these bands will never be forgotten.

Its great to see a site with such a comprehensive collection of photos etc. I was a big fan of Tweed and The Memories 78-83. I was a bottle boy at the time in the Jet Club in Ennis (in the pre-alcohol days, the only drink available in the dance hall was soft drinks. My pocket money was earned going around picking up the bottles around the hall during the dance. Some of those musicians were brilliant and very helpful with tips & advice to a young lad starting to play guitar. Hats off especially to Gay Brassil of Tweed and Domo Greene of the Memories for their inspiration. Hope you guys are still playing and keeping well. Paul

Answer: Thanks for the message Paul, Gay and Domo were two of our favorites as well, along with Tiger Taylor, Paul Lyttle and many others of the era.
