Started in 1950, the Gurteen Carnival was typical of the early carnivals around the country lasting only 8 days with
dancing held on five of the eight nights and plays on the other nights. It also included amusements (in this case
provided by O'Donnell's Amusements) and featured a 4,000 sq ft marquee for dancing. Although originally held
In October, by 1955, the carnival took place in early August. Sadly, the last carnival was apparently held in 1956. In recent
years a Gurteen Festival was started, but we don't think this was the same kind of "carnival" event.
