Opened on Easter Sunday, April 17th, 1960 this photo is of the interior of the ballroom taken from a 1960 souvenir postcard.
Our thanks to Emily O'Reilly for the photo. Music for the evening was by the "resident" Abbey Ballroom Orchestra with "evening dress
required." For almost a decade the ballroom would play host to the era's biggest names. Sadly, on
February 26th, 1969, the Abbey burned down. Owner of the building, impresario John Murphy, said that the Abbey would be rebuilt.
The cinema was - but the ballroom was gone forever.
