6, 1971 (Mon): Back to school. In St. Thomas’ dorm with Cilian Rogers,
Fergus Burke, Felim McNeela, Aidan Conlon, Gerard Kilfeather, and Tony Gilhawley.
Nothing much doing.
Sept. 6-12, 1971 (Mon-Fri): Nothing exciting.
Sept. 13-17, 1971 (Mon-Fri): Nothing exciting yet at all. Out
town a lot. Spare of a Dean replaced Packy Durr.
Sept. 18, 1971 (Saturday): Girl’s basketball tournament in
school gym. Reffed a game in the afternoon. All-Stars beat Claddagh Shamrocks.
Sept. 19, 1971 (Sunday): Sixes out town. Forty one students
gone to Knock on pilgrimage. Second day of girl’s basketball tournament. Winners
were Corinthians from Dublin.
Sept. 20-24 (Mon-Fri): Nothing much.

25, 1971 (Sat): Call. College out to pictures. Anthony McGoldrick joined
our dorm a while back. Saw “War Wagon” with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas.
Sept. 26, 1971 (Sun): Sixes out town. National Football League
final played and won by Offaly by 2 points.
Sept. 27, 1971 (Mon): Basketball training. New player is Jamie
Prince from New York.

28-Oct. 1 (Tue-Fri): Nothing much. Concert in Grange Hall on the
30th. Organized by Fr. John McGowan. I played solo for first time
(and last) ever.
Oct. 2, 1971 (Sat): Out to pictures to see “When Eight Bells
Toll,” Blue Glass was practicing as well.
Oct. 4, 1971 (Mon): Myself and Magoo went up around the new
building at midnight in our pajamas.

I dropped light bulb out window on Spare (the Dean) and didn't get caught!

from Paul Murphy who said, “I'm happy to salute anybody who can supply the date
of the Sloppy McGuaran "lightbulb incident" I remember that very well. I was in
the 2nd year dorm and you would probably have been in the Chickenhouses just
below. Sloppy or Schloppy came storming up the stairs to our dorm. The suspicion
was that it had come from us, though you may know better.”]

G.W.I. Basketball tournament in Fr. Flanagan Hall. College vs. Annadale
(Belfast) 18-81 loss. College vs. Neptune (Cork) 14-33 loss. College vs. Blue
Demons (Cork) tomorrow.
Oct. 10, 1971
(Sun):
College vs. Blue Demons 17-37 loss. Good game. Only down 16-14 at the half. Blue
Demons won the tournament. Anthony Cronelly left the All Stars.
Oct. 11-15, 1971 (Mon-Fri): Nothing much. Out town 11th,
12th, 14th.
Oct. 16, 1971 (Sat): Call. To Ursuline for All Star practice.
Oct. 17, 1971 (Sun): To Dublin to play Marian College with All
Stars, won a close game. Back by 11 p.m.
Oct 18-21, 1971 (Mon-Thu): Not much happening. Out town the 18th.
Oct. 22, 1971 (Fri): Magoo and I dossed to dance in Regional
Tec. Left at 11:30 p.m. and arrived around 12:00 midnight, but the dance was
over. Duggan Brothers were playing.
Oct. 23, 1971 (Sat): Played game against Larkenfield. Lost
44-41. Out town.
Oct.
24, 1971 (Sun): Sixes out town. Out to pictures, saw “Solomon and
Sheba,” Okay picture.
Oct. 25, 1971 (Mon): Out town with Fergus Burke. Had a fun time
in the Ritz Café.
Oct. 26-27, 1971 (Tue-Wed): Out town both days. Half day on the
27th.
Oct. 28, 1971 (Thu): Half day for teacher’s meeting.
Oct. 29, 1971 (Fri): Another half day, this time for holidays.
Left for Scotland with All Stars arrived in Glasgow at 10:00 p.m.
Oct. 30, 1971 (Sat): Played Penilee and lost by 16 points. I
didn’t play. Went shopping in afternoon. Dance in Tiffany’s in Glasgow, shirt
and tie required, 60p to get in.
Oct. 31, 1971 (Sun): Halloween. Dance in College. Got back to
Sligo at 2:30 p.m. It was cold and rainy. Good dance with Duggan brothers
playing. Slept in College, Tom and Patrick Phillips and me.
Nov. 1, 1971 (Mon): Home to Foxford. Dance in Pontoon with
“Ranchers and Slim Whitman.” Bought Atomic Rooster single, “Devil’s Answer.”
Nov. 2, 1971 (Tue): Back to College. Training with All Stars at
9:00 in gym.
Nov. 3, 1971 (Wed): Played Regional Tech in basketball. We won
72-29. It was a great game.
Nov 4, 1971 (Thu): Fergus, Magoo, Aidan, and me went to St.
Columba’s mental hospital to sing for patients.
Nov. 6, 1971 (Sat): Out town with Tom Phillips.
Nov. 8, 1971 (Mon): Half day.
Nov. 9, 1971 (Tue): Half day, out town for Bishop Hanley's
year's minder Mass.
Nov. 11, 1971 (Thu): Five's vs. the Regional Tech in debate. No
study. Summerhill won the debate.
Nov.
12, 1971 (Fri): Retreat in College. Shown "Boys Town" film. Blue
Glass recorded original song, "Charlie" in stereo.
Nov. 13, 1971 (Sat): Whist drive with Ursuline Convent girls. Cilian
Rogers, Fergus Burke, Magoo, and Gerry wore pajamas to tea.
Nov. 14, 1971 (Sun): College senior footballers played St.
Nathy's of Ballaghdereen and lost 3-6 to 0-4. Went to Jim O'Donnell's for tea.
Very nice. College sixes got out to Sligo Opera Society's "Barber of Seville" in
town.
Nov. 15, 1971 (Mon): Bought flash bulbs for camera.
Nov. 16-19 (Tue-Fri): Nothing much happened.

20, 1971 (Sat): Two games in basketball. Played Portara of Belfast lost
51-48. Played Marist Brothers, Athlone and lost by 20 points. College out to the
pictures to see "2001, A Space Odyssey" or "Soldier Blue."
Nov. 21, 1971 (Sun): Junior footballers played St. Muredach's
of Ballina. Got a lift home with Christie. Saw Senin Turnbull and brought record
player back to dorm.
Nov. 22-23, 1971 (Mon-Tue): Out town both days.
Nov. 24, 1971 (Wed): Ceili dancing lessons with Fr. "Gusty"
McKeon for all sixes. Learned 1-2-3.
Nov 25, 1971 (Thu): Out town. No photos back yet. Ceili lessons
again with Gusty.
Nov. 26, 1971 (Fri): Out town again trying to get photos back,
but not yet. Ceili lessons yet again with Gusty.

27, 1971 (Sat): Went to Dublin with All-Stars to play Penilee from
Scotland. Lost badly by 9 points and played in the Carroll System's Gym. After
went to National Ballroom to see "Jim Tobin and the Firehouse" with Monty
Monaghan and Brendan Brogan.
Nov 28, 1971 (Sun): Got up at 11:30 and went to Mass at 12;15,
then to West County Inn for lunch. Bought "Please Please Me," Beatles album
yesterday. Played in tournament, In semi finals against St. Vincent's won by one
point, but game was not over because it was really tied, due to a scoring error.
Played a 5 minute overtime and won 7-4. Fans went absolutely crazy. Then played
trinity in the finals and won on John McGowan's layup at the buzzer 27-26. Got
back to Sligo at 6:00 a.m.
Nov. 29, 1971 (Mon): In bed all day, but out town after school
to get photos. Only 6 came out. 42p. Had Ceili.
Nov. 30, 1971 (Tue): Got shirt redone. Sunday was Legion of
Mary hop. Out town, got biro.
Dec. 1, 1971 (Wed): At 9:45 we had a bomb scare and evacuated
the buildings until 10:30. Second bomb due at 2:00 p.m. Had basketball training
A's vs. B's 74-48. This day week is Dec. 8th!
Dec. 2, 1971 (Thu): Pretty much of a normal day. Nothing doing
at all.Out town. Bloggs was acting Dean. Bought Film.
Dec.3, 1971 (Fri): Out town, nothing much at all.
Dec. 4, 1971 (Sat): Out town with Tony G. and Tom P.,
trying to buy a record for Cilian R. Out to pictures (sixes only). Went to Bazaar
with Magoo, Fergus B., and lost Gerry K's hat to Bernie & gang, but finally got it
back.
Dec. 5, 1971 (Sun): I got a call today, they finally came at
3:50 p.m. We ate at the Bon Chere. Meanwhile, the Senior football team beat St. Muredach's and so we were out to the flicks. I took a long walk and then went to
the Bazaar instead. It was a bit of craic.
Dec. 6, 1971 (Mon): Out town with Fergus B.. Got hair cut.
Dec.
7, 1971 (Tue): Out town. Bought needle for record player (4/-). No PE or
basketball. Now have 8/- for tomorrow.
Dec. 8, 1971 (Wed): Free Day! Had big dinner, served by
priests, very good. Out town after tea and went out with Tom Phillips. Out to
pictures at night. Saw "Doctor in Trouble," which was pretty good. The boys, Pat
Brogan, Magoo, and Fergus B. went drinking! Couldn't believe it!
Dec. 9, 1971 (Thu): Out town and to Mental Hospital for
benediction.
Dec. 10, 1971 (Fri): Played in concert in Gilhooley Hall with
Ceili Band (tin whistle)...even though I couldn't play I just pretended!
Dec. 11, 1971 (Sat): Had basketball training with All Stars and
I found out we're going to Galway tomorrow. Had Flamingo fights.
Dec. 12, 1971 (Sun): Suppose to leave for Galway at 8:45 a.m.,
woke up at 9:00 a.m.. I thought I was late, but got there just in time. John
McGowan, Gerry Monaghan, Robert Burns and myself in one car and Cormic Carty,
Stewart Watson, John Burns, and Buggy O'Hara in the other. Won our first game
vs. Clifden 53-49. Had a piece of toast and tea. Played second game vs. Gort and
won 73-54. Had dinner in Lydon's Cafe in Galway. Played semi final against St.
Vincent's, Killarney and lost 77-58. Bad game. Had tea in Lydon's and then came
back through Foxford. Was at home for about an hour, got some money and some
tuck for Liam.
Dec. 13, 1971 (Mon): Missed first class and was counted absent.
Out town after school. Bought light bulb for dorm. Magoo swiped a streamer and
balloon. Spent 5/-. Caught Eddie Tighe out because of his mistake.
Dec. 14, 1971 (Tue): Out town, nothing special. 2p apple tarts.
Dec. 15, 1971 (Wed): Out town, "missed" Latin. Went to Ursuline
after school. half day. Saw Andrea, Mom called to say she is coming Friday
night, hope we'll get home before the weekend.
Dec. 16, 1971 (Thu): Asked Father Finnegan if we could go home
and he said we probably could. Asked Spare first and he said no! Liam was in bed
yesterday and today. Out town, did the usual. Sent out of ref by Socket...Finn
Harps!
Dec. 17., 1971 (Fri): Home for Christmas holidays.
Dec 18-Jan 9, 1972: Christmas Holidays.
Jan. 10, 1972 (Mon): Back to school, arrived at about 11:15
a.m. Not many sixes are back yet. Class at 11;30 a.m. Dossed most of the
day...out town.
Jan. 11, 1972 (Tue): Nothing much. All Star practice at 7:00
p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Okay I guess.
Jan. 12, 1972 (Wed): Senior basketball practice, not very good,
nothing happening.
Jan. 13, 1972 (Thu): Bobby acting Dean, caught next door
playing poker. Skip rope is the big thing in the dorm. Out town for "Sounds"
magazine.
Jan. 14, 1972 (Fri): Tony G. and I went to the music room for a
while and played some stuff..."Southern Man."
Jan.15, 1972 (Sat): Spent some time in the music room and then
went downtown with Fergus B. Tried to get more paint tiles.
Jan. 16, 1972 (Sun): Played Mayo with Sligo Minors in
basketball and won, 72-67. I scored 22 and Buggy O'Hara scored 21, Stewart
Watson-5, Sean Maloney-12, Francis Rogers-11, and Raphael Rooney scored 2. Good,
exciting game. Buggy O'Hara brought me out for a feed and a couple of cokes. Felim
M. was
in bed today.
Jan. 17, 1972 (Mon): Basketball practice, call at 7:30 from
Mom. Felim M. and Cilian R. in bed today.
Jan. 18-21, 1972 (Tue-Fri): Not much.
Jan. 22, 1972 (Sat): To Dundalk with Stewart and Sean for the
International trials with Stewart's cousin and father. He got sick 6 times going
up. Stayed in Sean's house from 8:30 - 12:00 midnight afterwards.
Jan. 23, 1972 (Sun): Girl's game in gym. Manor House, Dublin
vs. Mercy Convent, Sligo in the All Ireland semi finals.
Jan. 24, 1972 (Mon): Nothing much, except basketball training.
Jan. 25, 1972 (Tue): Again nothing much but basketball
training.
Jan. 26, 1972 (Wed): Basketball games against Foxford.
Cakewalked in Juniors and Seniors. Won Senior game 68-22 or something. I was
very sick during the game. Couldn't go home with them, but Liam was with them.
