Comments: from  navan .....played pedal steel an lead guitar with the cotton mill boys from early to mid eighty's  quite extensive uk tours some of which was up to 6 weeks. the line up was Gerry Madigan/ Charlie Arkins/ John McGrenra / Alan Barton / Sharon King, and at some era in there , was Tony  Hughes .  we had a live  show video recording from the mean fiddler in London   featuring Sharon King  which i still have also bluegrass album recorded in Slane studios   .about 1985 Charlie Arkins  and I formed a  band called " Mailtrain"  with the  introduction  of Harry Martin  from Drogheda  (lead vocals) and Pat Deegan on bass guitar and of course  excellent drummer Alan Barton.  occasionally  we had stand in musos!   I  remember  somewhere in there,  was  Eamon Flood from  Drogheda  (bass guitar) and great vocals. later on  Eamon  resided  in the  uk. I  wonder  if he ever went back to Ireland? as mail train  we recorded 2 tracks in slane studios  a side" mary dear " and the b side....well justs escapes me right now  but the ep's are here somewhere which i will post later!

Comments: I used to be a friend of Noel Pender and The Peepoday Boys when they played in London probably 35 years ago. I am curious to know  if any of them are still with us (unlikely considering how we used to party). I was a particular friend of Grant Curran the guitarist and became his roadie when he left the band. After a few years I sobered up and moved out to East Anglia to complete my drying out. Happy Days!

Comments: I left a message before and I complimented you on a fantastic site. I was so sad to see that so many band members have passed away. In Ennis Co Clare in the late 60s there was a showband called The Coasters Combo. It was an 8 piece band and they played in Clare Limerick Tipperary. My brother Patrick Mulqueen was the Trumpet player. Flan Mc Mahon played sax. Michael McMahon , Flans brother both dead rip, played piano accordeon. Noel Carmody, Miney Madigan and Liam Madigan, brothers were in the Coasters Combo too.I will have to search my memory for the last member. Keep up the great work. Séamus Mulqueen. Ennis, Co. Clare

Comments: My wonderful daddy was the songwriter and lead singer of the Rascals- Billy Walsh - who enjoyed success including a top 10 hit in Ireland in the 1970's with (I think) Peaches and Cream (wasn't born then, give me a break!). Since leaving the band, he has stayed true to his heart and played music all around Derry and Donegal over the next 3 decades and has been loved and adord by many - including Sue Pollard! He was a wonderful songwriter and still is a wonderful musician. He is loved by his fans for not only his wonderful voice and musical talent, but for his wit and homour and his ability to engage his audience. In my eyes , he is a true showman. He knows Johney Logan and Andrew Strong's da! oh Yes! Although I would say that his biggest success over the many years would be that he is a wonderful father to his two beautiful daughters and has brought music into their tone-deaf lives. I love you daddy and I am so proud of you. x

Comments: Hello, My Dad, Stephen Treacy, was a member of the Pioneer Aces (later the Premier Aces) and the Rhythm Stars. I was just talking to him on the phone a few minutes ago and mentioned google-ing his name last year and all the references I found to him during the Showband Era.  Dad would be a technophobe and doesn't have a p.c. so I've told him about the site and printed off a few pages to show him next time I'm down home.  He's very chuffed about it.  So I'd just like to compliment the site; there's obviously a huge amount of time and effort put in and I've seen many photos for the first time.  I know there's loads down home I could dig out and send to you so I'll make it my mission to do that at some point. Best wishes, Ruth Treacy Newcastle Co. Dublin

Comments: Folks, the Lord gave me "I'm Just Lucky, I Guess" to write back in 1962. Gene Stuart and The MIghty Avons recorded it in 1970-71. I need to find a copy of the album it was in as well as the single "I'm Just Lucky, I Guess". "Then I'll Stop Loving You" was on the opposite side of the 45 RPM record. Gene and the Mighty Avons got the song started until today Nov-2009 it has been recorded by 19 different artists in 51 different formats. I'm thankful that Gene and The Mighty Avons liked the song well enough to record. I certainly have been blessed. It would be awesome to get a note from them or be able to write Gene someday and thank him personally but...??? Any help in these matters and finding the first cuts will certainly be appreciated, God Bless, J. D.

Rockabilly was the order of the day, bands like "matchbox" daddy cool & the lollipops, Reacy, the Darts and so on,
The big Irish bands of the time were Horslips, the Memories, Joe dolan and Johnny Logan , Gina, Dale Hayes And the Champions, and my favorates,The Lookalikes..........Great times, anyway good luck with the site and thank you ,Kieran G. Lyons.

Comments: Hi there. I would like to congratulate Gina Dale Haze and The Champions on their fantastic preformance in The Glen Eagle last Saturday night. They looked great on stage and sang each song better than the last. Gina and Dale preformed together perfectly. It was great to watch them  all having so much fun between themselves on stage laughing and joking and reminissing about old times and the friends they had all over the country. They had the audience clapping and singing from the start of the two and a half hour show to the finish, singing all the old hits e.g. Minnie Minnie, Drunken Sailer, Real Good Feeling etc.. Dale Haze sang as good as he did 17yrs. ago if not better and stronger, and Gina's voice is still as good as ever. It was a great night of nostalgia, fun, excitment and pure  Irish entertainment  and I would like to Thank them for that ,and I hope we'll see them back on the stage real soon again. P.S. Thanks for the request Dale.

Webmaster Note: No bands listed on the site have any relationship with the site and therefore may, or may not see personal messages such as this. Sorry.

Comments: Hi. I just looked-in to have a look at photos of the Clippers.  I am particularly interested in ones featuring Michael O'Hanlon as he passed away on Monday 7th September.  He is a relative and a close family friend and will be missed so much by everyone.  Michael entertained us with stories of his travels and experiences and he could have a room full of people "in-stitches" just by "being himself".  The children loved his "severed thumb" trick, and tired in vain to copy him!  He was so modest about his talents of which he had many.  R.I.P. Michael, we will miss you.

Waterford in the 70's meeting Gerdie and getting spins in his sports cars, when ever he was home he always had time for his friends and neighbours and he never forgot his roots. In the long ago, used to go dancing on the country scene and often went to the Country Night at the National Ballroom on Parnells Square.  Many's the fine lass I met there.  Got to know the owner over the years (1974/5/6) .....Christy something and a couple of sidekicks he used to have with him and they were great crack.  Anyone remember him or them ?  Twas the place to go back then.

Comments: I stopped playing in 1989 with the Kid Wayne Country Band to be able to spend more time in Business  From the early 60's I played in the Jimmy Johnston Band. We played a lot around the top half of the country from Dublin to Donegal with a few gigs in Waterford and Killarney, Cavan, Letrim, &  Monaghan area's. We all loved as the dancing fans where mighty. Rockcurry the home of Big Tom. Monaghan Town. Drumshanbo for 5 hours playing none stop. all the midweek Carnivals all great fun. Just a few of gigs that come to mind. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the 2 band I played in. please send me a e-mail. I am living in Hillsborough Co down and my work takes me all over UK and Ireland. I think your web page is great and if I can help you at anytime regarding information just send me a mail. Looking forward to receiving some mail. Regards, Maurice Beckett

I also recorded radio and TV commercials for ritz records and mick clerkin would arrive some times at our studios to see the session. I remember we recorded alot of daniel o donnell commercials with larry gogan and val joyce doing the voice over work. Other labels that come to mind are CMR which was donie cassidys label we recorded commercials for foster and allen and louise morrissey. Great website keep up the good work.

Comments: Excellent site. Well done to everybody. You have done a great job on Irish Showbands. Please add maybe the following. One of the best drummers in the North East Region was then and still is THE JAG (Jagger) otherwise known as Sean Callaghan from Kingscourt, Co. Cavan who played with JUST FRIENDS from Ardee, Co. Louth. Played for 20 years and is a living legend when it comes to anything to do with Buddy Holly music. He has every known recording and others! and of course as the name suggests "THE JAG" is a rock musician of renown. Again, well done with the site.

Comments: Great to find a picture of the William Ponsonby Showband, he was our paternal uncle. The whole Ponsonby family in Donegal were music orientated, our Dad, Denis or `Dinnie` as he was known back home was only in the band for a brief period in 1960 after we moved back to Ireland. Dad brought us all back to Birmingham shortly afterwards where he started a business that has now grown into a large company. Dad sadly passed away in 1996 but even today people always make the connection when we mention our surname with the Irish showband of the same name!! `Thats all for now! Your next dance please!

Comments: I remember great gigs around London, during Lent 1956, particularly at the Elephant & Castle. I was studying trombone at the RCM, and was delighted to be asked to dep. for the duration of that visit to London. Lessons picked up in the "Show Band" approach have stayed wwith me, and are still paying dividends - I'm still playing and entertaining and was lucky enough to play with in Lent 1956 with the Mick Delahunty Band. All the best to the present band - and thanks for the "helpful" memories.

Comments: We must never forget the contribution which the showbands made to the development of irish music, its not just the big stars butthe girls and boys who entertained us in the numerous pop and country showbands.Sure we had our own favourites but don't let us forget the sacrifices they made, forgoing no a normal l life and relationships, travelling for hours on end to and from dancehalls and other venues, giving their all, most weeks of the year, entertaining  us for a few hours, so much so that we looked forward to their next visit, and to the unsung heroes the roadie, the band manager, and the agent all of whom formed the fabric of the showband, so please don't forget them!

it brings back great memories, especially the floral hall and the arcadia, portrush.fred hanna was the resident band at the floral hall and when a "big" band was playing he would augment his band with guest players to give an even better show.i don't know if it's true but i heard that jacky flavelle was the only player ever  to return to play with dave glover.i dont like seeing showband survivors on tv,it reminds me how old we all are.

Comments: How are you doin'? I love the site - it really jerks and pulls the old memory banks. I have moved my working location should anyone need to contact me - for 17 years I was with Music Maker, but last September made the move to the future of instrument retailing in Ireland, something I always thought should happen but could never finance - a real music mega-store. 23,000 sq ft of state of the art premises just off the Red Cow roundabout - X MUSIC. Music wise I have been playing with Joanna and Tequila Sunrise for the last couple of years and it has been a joy - not only because Joanna is the most professional and consistent lady in the business but she actually "lets" me play guitar, which I love. Just wanted to bring you up to speed with my current lot and say a big HELLO to all who remember me, for whatever reason - it really is good to stay in touch, and how rarely we do!!! Best Regards for now - Paul Lyttle.

Sure wish they would come back and perform in Evansville again. The people at the Executive Inn went crazy over the group. Thoise were the good ole' days. Of course, those days can not be recreated, for several of the group are either not in the US or are now deceased. But the memories are still there and you cannot take the memories away, but it would be wondeful to be able to see whatever members of the group perform again and create some more recent memories.

Comments: your Show Band web site is brillant and very interesting for anyone who is intrested in the history of the Irish showband's. I was lucky to have been a young musician  in the 1960s and to have played trumpet for 3 years on a showband from Campile co Wexford called the Kingston Showband and looking at the photos of the showbands remind me of the time I played support to a lot of the big name bands in the Barrowland Ballroom in New Ross.

Comments: I'm 66 yrs old & have only recently went on internet. I was delighted to find so much information and indeed items about bands and music from times long gone. ie Lee Lynch who would be known to London residents amongst others. Whatever happened to Collette who used to sing in his band the Blue Angels? I've read the list of musicians who has departed from us . I missed the news of Doc Carrols demise. This is my first venture into communicating on this wonderous invention and I'm still treating it as a new toy. I've been lucky enough to hear music by Horseslips, Joe Dolan RIP Lee Lynch Deloras Keane Ronnie Drew RIP Sean Keane, but no sign of "Poitin" with Naisa Power,RIP ( Waterford, Drummer/vocalist) Michael O'Rourke,(Fiddle) Dave Golden (Liverpool, Base guitar) Joe O'Donnell, (Donegal; Lead Guitar/vocalist. I know they made some recordings in the 1970s or '80s. The best of luck to all of you involved in this noblest of efforts. God Bless.

If you want more pics of the band let me know. Prior to joining the Caroline, I was with Earl Gill (including the Hoedowners) both on the road and resident at the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin. Comments: A band that you haven't put in which was formed by Eamon Dowd, was the Swinging Swine which were on the road from 1987 to 1990. The band had one single called, "Them Ghosts Do Come" and they also recorded a Nick Drake cover called Voice From The Mountain on a Nick Drake compilation album. Thanks.

Answer: Martin if you can send us more details about the band, we will be happy to list them.

Comments: Its a real pleasure to be able to contribute my two pence worth to the wonderful work done by your site. Its heart warming to see we can still in the memories of that wonderful era. Yes indeed, the era of happiness, when you could go out dancing and no fear of trouble. Girls could feel safe. Those were the days long gone, I'm afraid, like so many of the bands, dance halls, marquees, town Halls, Last, but not least, some of the finest entertainers (i.e., Joe Dolan, Brendan O'Brien, Tom Dunphy, Dermot O'Brien, Danny Pearse and so many many more RIP. Why I mention Danny is he was the first of that era to pass away due to that dreaded word the big "C". We lost our best, lets hope they are at rest with a huge showband up above. Just imagine Joe and Brendan with support artists, Elvis, Buddy Holly, John Denver, Jim Reeves. What a nite! rock on folks, Thanks again to every one who brought such joy to our hearts and Irish Showbands for keeping the memories alive in our time, God Bless You All. Sean Thompson.

Comments: This is a brilliant site. I have spent hours browsing through the showband photos and information. My husband Mike Dalton played with the Capitol and Paddy Cole Superstars and it is great to look back on those good old days. Being a showband widow was difficult and raising a family in that scene wasn't easy as I am sure many of the wives will identify with, but the music was terrific. We have a D.V.D. "Irish Showbands" A trip down memory lane, I have given it as a gift to many of my friends and wonder if anymore have been recorded. It was introduced by George Jones with " Do you come here often" It is played continuosly here, as sadly Mike now suffers from dementia and has severe memory loss but will sing every song and beat out every tune on it. Keep up the great work.

Comments: What can I say that hasn't already been said? I followed Brian Coll since I was a kid, I loved C&W and Brian was as good as they come, as a matter of fact Brian was as good, and even better than a lot of American C&W singer's. Brian entertained for so many years, and is still bringing in the crowds. I used to go mostly to carnival, where the big bands played in Marquee's, hence the Declan Nerney song, (Marquee in Drumlish). I still have lots of music belonging to BC... A great singer indeed...
