Jimmy Masson was a prominent leader of the orchestra in the Gresham Hotel, Dublin, in the forties and in the National Ballroom in the fifties. He also was resident band leader during the first three years of Butlins Holiday Camp in Mosney. If you are interested in adding my father to your list let me know and I will send you additional information.

Comments: my uncle use to play the Indians in the late 70s when I was in my early teens there was 1 song I used to like I don't know the name of it, but I do remember singing (ughka luka lushka witch means that I love you and if you'll be my baby I'll ughka luka lushka you.) sorry about the spelling. If it was a song the Indians sung could some one let me know the name of it plz. This would mean a lot to me as I lost my uncle a few yrs ago and 1 thing we both enjoyed was listening to his tapes.

Comments: I thoroughly enjoyed a trawl through your site,it took me back to the late 70s when I played steel guitar in Roly Daniels' band along with Seamus Mahon, Davy Gorman, Martin Gildea, Johnny Morris and Martin Cleary. Good days, good guys, good gigs, good craic, crap money. Playing in this band gave me my first taste of the pro scene, and I learned a lot from it. I never regretted it, and still play today ( I'm 65 now) for a living. Bob Dixon Bristol

Comments: You list the Kevin O'Doherty Showband, Dublin. I played bass guitar in it for a while and the following are some memories. First of all the head's name was Kevan, the A was important. Kevan was an asthmatic alto sax player, there was a 2nd sax player called Arthur, a trumpet player called Ambrose Bonnie (Last seen in the Merrion Sq. Art Gallery). the drummer was Frank? who plays golf in Newlands. I can't remember much more. Kevan was a music teacher on Crumlin Road and I think that he also played in theatre orchestras.

(Editor's note: Our thanks to Kevin for the info, we are following up via email)

Comments:  Have just read about the passing of Derek McCormick . I'm devastated .First heard the Barleycorn at the 1988 World Expo in Brisbane. What a talent Derek was .Never have I heard Danny Boy sung so beautifully . His version of Maggie is still one of the best. I met him at Twin Towns ,Gold Coast when he was with the Fureys . I reminded him of a headline in the local paper at Expo. 'Irish singer can't sing because he has broken his hand .' The Fureys nearly fell off their bar stools.   RIP derek you gave us so much pleasure.

The Witnesses from Belfast featured Tony Morelli guitar & vocals and Trixie Hamilton bass & vocals.  Trixie is now 79 years old and playing as well as ever and can be heard nost saturday afternoons in the Europa hotel belfast, where he play with the Gerry Rice jazz quartet, Gerry was the clarenet and sax player with the witnesses. Also i seem to remember Houstin Wells playing for a time with the Premier aces. Ripchords lead singer was Cyril Shane

Comments: I Followed the Clipper all through the north and in my home town of Ballymena in Co Antrim where this fantastic band was so popular. I also went to see them in "The Beverly Cavern"  in Hollywood California when I lived there, Tommy Maken and the Clancy Brothers also came to see them as they were appearing at the Hollywood Bowl the following night and Hugh invited them up on stage to sing which they did. A great night.
The Clipper were without doubt the best Showband by far followed by The Quigley's from Derry,  another great band, I had many happy nights dancing to the wonderful music produced by these gifted musicians. Thanks for the memories.

Comments: Hi All,  I was a founder member of the Red Seven/Columbia Showband.  I have just  finished a book "Memoirs of the Red Seven/Columbia Showband Arklow" and hope to have it available in about two months time. It gives a great insight into the showband era of the sixties as told by the members (20 in all) who played with the band during its 10 years existance (1960 - 1969). It contains some very interesting stories - well worth a read by all those who lived through that golden period and indeed it will be an education to all young peole who want to learn more about that time.

Comments: I find this site very interesting and would like to learn of things. I would like to buy/obtain copies of Traveling People and Curragh of Kildare by Johnstons. In late 60s when in Marine Corps I found it very soothing to listen to these songs while sipping beer or Guinness in Queens , NY  Just having the old records gives peace of mind as those days in Corps were not the best. Thanks. These songs by Johnstons are very haunting and touch the soul- what other groups are like them?

One time when we had travelled to Burtonport from London on holiday we saw the bands mini bus going out to a show and Mum said to the driver of the mini bus is that young girl margo with the band now ?  margo as you would know,  is Daniel O'Donnell's sister. Also, doesn't Susan Boyles family come from Keadue Burtonport ?

And the Supreme Showband was not a spin off of The Joe Lowney Luxembourg Band. But we did a few gigs for Joe when his band was breaking up.I do hope this information helps.I left The Supreme and went to England and got the gig with Leapy Lee " Little Arrows"  Best Regards, Robbie

Sadly that talent bypassed the bIrmingham branch of the family but strangely my son has his own band, Black Market Empire! So the genes rock on!!

It brings back such a flood of memories not just of the showbands, or my old Quartermaster days but of the great musical history. It is a terrific job well done and from my own point of view, its great to see a photo of me and Hank B Marvin in Perth. It was great to meet one of my heroes and tell him of our Quartermaster days when we were known locally as the threequarters, but it was a fab time. John Mahon, Ex-Quartermasters

When we told Brendan we were getting married he insisted we give him a ring when we got to Waterford, which we did after booking into the  Towers hotel.within half an hour he was at the hotel. and speaking to the receptionist unbooked us,collected our luggage and brought us to stay the night with himself and Stella, his wife at their home, giving us a great night out with his friends and all these years of memories..That was 1968, when he was at the top We have seen him on a number of occassions since, but would like to register our thanks to a truly wonderful performer, and one great guy !

Brendan was my Farther that comment was really nice to hear he was one if not the best singer in Dublin at that time i would have loved to see him back in them days he was a teriffic singer. It's great to see his picture on the Internet. Gone are the days when i remember my farther learning words to songs when he would rewind tapes  to hear the right lyric to a song and if he couldn't hear we would all be called in to give our opinion on what we taught the word was with the volume raised to it's highest so we can hear..... LOL Now you just type it into the internet and print your lyrics  thanks for the memories i was too young to be around then x

Comment: I am a daughter of John Kenny " known by "Jack"  from Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim. My Dad along with 2 brothers,  Austin & James mostly known as "Jim" (also now deceased) played in a band in the 50's thru 1960?  They mostly played  in the west of Ireland, Leitrim/Roscommon & Mayo. I wish I had talked to my Dad about his days in the band, but I left for America very young...but I guess everyone has some regrets in life! If anyone has anything to share about my father, Uncle Jim or Uncle Austin---whom I never met, would love to hear from you.
As a young child, I loved listening to my Dad play tunes... by Fats Domino like Blueberry Hill, Aint That A Shame and many more. Some day I can tell you about the time I came upon a festival in a wee town in Louisiana(1985) and met the Man himself "Fats Domino". Thank you and hopefully some day I will learn more about my Dad!
Best, Deirdre Kenny-Nay (nee Kenny)

Comments: I listened to Tony Kenny at The Templeogue Lawn Tennis Club Dance (Sunday Night)1968. I  can't remember what band he was with, where I remember him singing Cara Mia O Mi, yet I can't see this record in his discography. He had a gorgeous fallsetto voice which was suitable for such a song made famous by Gene Pitney. I'm curious as to what group he sang with in his early years 1968. Would it have been The Strangers out of Ballbriggan?
(Editor's note: Tony was with the Sands from October 1967 to 1972, prior to this he was with the Vampires. Cara Mia was the B-side of Venus, released by Tony and the Sands in 1970)

Comments: Hi all, since we last touched base I've lost some old mates from the showband  era: Norman Henry  Lead guitar (we were at school together), Eric Campbell (thumper) drums, Merv Allen, lead  singer, J J  band.  The news that these good Ole boys had passed away reached me too late to pay my proper respects; so from all the   boys who missed out. I'd like to say God bless Merv, Eric, Norman.

Comments: Hi, just  like to say I have only recently found the site and think it's great. As an "auld stager" myself it's nice to look back over the years and memories. Where the hell have all the years gone? Would like to point out that under "Managers" section Cecil Thompson of CT Promotions  was also manager of 1980's country showband American Express, in fact one of his biggest bands at that time. I myself, along with Harry Beckinsale were the two founder members of the band. I would like to send some more info and photos in the near future but in the meantime keep up the good work. I hope you find the above helpful. Kind regards, Brian Croker.

Comments: Great site!. Thought you would like to know that the Dick Whitney Showband was from Wexford .They later became The Visitors Showband. Thought I should tell you that  the late Jim Gunner was a recording artist in his own right and released at least two singles in England. before joining Dave Glover and other bands, among them one of Joe Lowney's lineups in Wexford. The first was called "Hooley Jump" on the Decca label ,followed by "Desperado" which was on Fontana. Although it was never in the top twenty "Hooley Jump" sold a lot of copies .After the Showband scene faded he went into cabaret in the Liverpool area where he died some years ago. He was a great guitarist.

Comments: Great  to see the showband photos rembering those great times i sang with the regal showband and jack Brierley in the 60s. what great memories got bless you. This is a poem i wrote about those great years. its called The Dancing Years:
When the showbands came to town, to go dancing then was half a crown. / We would watch Dickie Rock & the Miami too and on stage came Brendan Bowyer singing the Hucklebuck shoes / The girls would scream, they were in such pain, and then Butch Moore walked on singing Walking The Street in the Rain. / We would go to ask a girl out for a dance, some would scatter, others would still be in a trance./ The Arcadia was our favourite dance hall, and it was known world wide by one and all. / Great recording stars played there too and you would have to be early to join the queue. / All those bands I did know, I met them all on the Showband Show. / The dancing years it was special to us, I even remember going to Crosshaven in the Regal bus. / When the night was over the DJ would say try not to roam, Good night, God bless and to you all, safe home.
Written by Jim Cotter, ex-Regal showband.

Saw them many times in the early 60s in Our Lady's Hall, Mourne Road, Drimnagh, Dublin 12, until I went to Slough.  I used to go to London most weekends to see the Irish Showbands. There was a good dancehall in Ealing Broadway which I think was called The Inishfree. Great days to be young. God be with them.

Comments: Hi everybody, greetings from Cork, the "real" Capital. what a wonderful web-site'congrats on a brilliant job. I would like to tell of our campaign in Cork for a showband  commemerorative stamp of The Dixies which is currently underway in Cork where in 2007 we had 20 placques of Top Showbands laid on the pavement beside the famous Arcadia Ballroom on the lower glanmire road, directly opposite the railway station. In the sixties i worked in the Arcadia and later i was the Entertainments manager in the Island Room, Moores Hotel which was a very popular Cabaret and Dancing venue and where all the top acts and bands performed.  I am currently writing a book on the cabaret scene,i hope to have it out in time for christmas 2010. I am the writer of the book "Is That You Boy !" about growing-up in Cork in the '40s and '50s and i also organise an occasional "Gig". Love and best wishes to all. Noel Magnier.

(Note: Very few recordings of the showband era ever made it to CD as there is not enough demand to justify the cost of a CD release. We're not sure about the Ludlows. Perhaps the best bet is to post a request on our free forum.)

Comments: Does anyone have any detailed information on Denis Murray-He was the founder and lead singer of an old band called Murray & Condon ( Successful Irish duo) ? I am supposed to contact him and am having trouble finding anything on him on other sites.  Lots on "Condon", but not Murray.  He has recorde at Roseland Studios (burnt down?) in Moate County, Westmeath.  I am a resident of the USA and do not know all the terminology to find phone numbers and addresses there.  I discovered upon researching, that there are thousands of Denis Murrays possibly.

I've enjoyed reading up on the various artists featured on your site.  Thank you very much!!

As I am not of the showband generation I am looking forward to some audio on your site. Do you think there will be some audio of the airchords, my dad Arthur's brother tells me they were fab.

Comments: Enjoyed sifting through the site. Back in the 90's (or maybe late 80's) I did a fairly comprehensive article in Sunday World on the ballrooms under the heading, "What are they now"?  I was entertainments manager of The Copper Beech in Edenderry from the night it opened, September 12th, 1972 and just before that I was co-manager of Michael Landers the 5 year old wonderboy who made his first record before making his First Communion. His single was entitled, "If I Could Be A Sailorman". The late great and legendary Dermot O'Brien played on that debut disc. I send greetings to all the people in the business that knew me. Currently recovering from Liver Transplant surgery. God bless.

Editor's Note: Michael Landers was from Kilcullen, Co. Kildare  and his record was released on the Ruby label (catalog RUB.131) with "The Taxman" on the B-side.

I listen to the Dixies sometimes and I can hear my grandad playing the piano in the backround but then I start to cry because I miss him so much. I think one of the songs they wrote was names after me ebcause my name is Katie and they wrote a song called "Katies Kisses". I will always love the Dixies and i miss my grandad so much.

Comments: Just came across this great website while looking on the internet for any info on The Melody Swingtette, the band my father Frankie Mc Devitt was a member of in the 50's. Sadly, Dad died suddenly on 5th Dec '09 and we would dearly love if anyone with any old photos or recordings of the band would get in touch. Paddy, his brother, played in the band too and then went on to form his own band The Northern Lights, with which he had a hit with Little Isle Of Green. Any info would be much appreciated and you can email me at the address above . Thanks!

Comments: I have just discovered your site. What happy memories it brings back.I danced my way through the sixties and seventies and  to most of the showbands both big named ones nationally and the local ones in Cork. the dance halls like the"Arcadia" in Cork and the "Majorca" in Crosshaven, the "Showboat" in Youghal, all of the big bands played those venues.Sometimes the warm up bands were every bit as good as the headliners, somestimes even better.I married  a man named Paddy, who played with The Diplomats they were a great local band who played all over the country.

This site is a lovely way to go back over the memories of the past and in recent years I have made a point of going to hear newly formed showbands and still enjoy the music I grew up with.  A big thank you to all those boys and girls who have entertained us down through the years. He and my dad teamed up to do a jazz fiddle/guitar duo as my dad was a violinist. I recall Alex showing me and dad a photo of him with Elvis Presley when he played backings with Elvis in Las Vegas in the early 70's. Last I heard he was doing freelance gigs around Sydney and still lived in Narrabeen into the 80's. He was living with his wife at that time. Hope anyone finds this little bit of trivia interesting!
